TYPE: A seated Buddha statue

CIRCA: 1950

A hardwood statue of the Buddha seated with a serene expression on his face and his hands in the Dhyana mudra position, which is also called the ‘meditation mudra’ as it is commonly used in mediation practices associated with the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism.

The wood is hard, dense, fine grained and heavy, with a rich black lustre that is not from staining, but is the natural wood colour. Showcasing a subtle brown or muted orange streaking (due to mineral content) it is most likely Indian ebony. From an old Swedish collection.
