Striking Finnish long piled Ryijy (rug) designed by Terttu Tomero in the early 1960’s entitled “Havuhippa”, a word that is really non translatable into English but is a ‘creature’ from the Finnish 19th century epic Kalevala, which is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. (The Kalevala is a mix of Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology, which tells a story about the creation of the earth.) This handmade ryijy has long shaggy wool pile with rich warm colours and a beautiful green background and is made with wool warp and weft. It has been in the one owners collection since the mid sixties.
