TYPE: a small tibetan seating carpet or mat

CIRCA: 1900-1920

Richly saturated naturally dyed small Tibetan seating carpet featuring an array of beautiful natural dyes. The center-field is a mix of deep rich green dyed wool mixed with a natural brown wool that is then marled together to make the exquisite abrashed pile. At the very center is a stylised ‘double dorje’, centrist of which is a single green knot, the colours then expanding outward into yellow, red, a lovely subtle pink (not colour run!) and then off-white, all naturally dyed. Surrounding the dorje are four stylised clouds and red frets anchor the corners. The main border is the so-called ‘Greek T’ design which encloses an inner secondary border with crosses that mimic the tie-dyed ‘tigma pattern’ much beloved by Tibetans. It has both wool warp and weft that is hand-spun and was made in the early 19th century. There are no repairs or reweaves. Overall a very attractive and well constructed piece featuring a showcase of rich Tibetan natural dyes and in good condition.
