TYPE: An inlaid, Chinese, hand-carved wooden mask

CIRCA: 1930’s

A very well carved Chinese wooden mask which dates from the mid part of the first half of the 1900’s, and which has a super-expressive face, especially the eyes, and an overall beautifully aged patina on dark brown wood. Attention to detail has particularly been paid in the rendition of the old sage’s beard. Unfortunately there has been a  break at the bottom sometime during its life span and a repair has been done there at the very bottom, and a small piece of wood is missing (see bottom right photo). Still, this does not really distract for the allure of the piece.
