TYPE: seating square with mandala roundel

CIRCA: 1920

A multi-coloured Tibetan seating square with a mandala-like design at its center and edged with a short frilly woollen border. The center-field is enclosed with two narrow guard strips, then an inner border with the so-called ‘running-dog’ meander, then a main border with a T design and finally several narrow strips before reaching the frilly outer border. Made circa 1920, the size is 81cm x 74cm, the warp and weft are hand spun wool and the colours are a mix of natural and aniline dyes. When looked at closely, especially from the back side, it shows that the natural dyed wool used was mainly from small batch dye lots, which suggest rural or village work. An attractive colourful piece with full pile and no repairs or reweaves that embodies the Tibetans love for colour in an otherwise drab landscape.
