Naturally dyed Tibetan checkered khaden* with small (approximately +/- 2cm x 2cm) blue and white squares; the blue of which is abrashed throughout. It was made circa 1900, has hand-spun wool warp and weft, natural dyes, and the size is 153cm x 81cm. Some slight pile wear and could use a professional wash, after which it would really sparkle! It has been in the one collectors hands since being purchased in Kathmandu, Nepal, circa 1970 and this is the first time on the market since then. The simplicity of the design makes this carpet suitable for many environments, especially in today’s minimalist decorative world. In good to very good condition, especially for its age.
*An almost identical pair but with somewhat larger ‘checkers’ can be seen on page 80, in the excellent book on Tibetan carpets entitled Of Wool And Loom by Trinely Chodrak and Kesang Tashi.
