TYPE: Colourful Baotou pictorial carpet

CIRCA: 1920

A classic design of carpets often seen from the Baotou area of Inner Mongolia is the deer and crane under or next to a tree, as depicted here, but usually rendered only in various shades of blue. Here though we have an attractive more colourful version of that same theme*. These carpets were made to be viewed from either end so that whichever end you looked at it from one of the scenes was facing the viewer. The main border is the interlocked swastika design, while the inner border is sometimes refereed to as the ‘running dog’ meander. It was made circa 1920 / early 1900’s, has cotton warp and weft and the size is 139cm x 69cm. What may at first appear to be some colour run (in the blue / white border areas) is actually a mixture of blue and white wool ‘marled’ (or interwoven) together in various degrees / shades (see top right photo for one such example).
