A  womans mantle, or ahauyo, from the Challa village area, Bolivia. Lovely subtle ‘chimi’* effect from the mix of red and brown plied yarn in the warp (particularly noticeable in the ultra close up, center photo top row).

*Chimi (pronounced ‘chim-ee’) is the Aymaran word for the use of two colour plied yarns, usually in the main field, that renders a mottled colour effect to the textile.

Collected in Bolivia in the 1970’s.
