TYPE: Fossilized wood carved to resemble black bamboo

CIRCA:  1900 / early 1900’s

A solid block of fossilised wood carved to resemble bamboo culms (stalks) and stained to correspond to the look of a young clump of giant black bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra Daikokuchiku*). Made in Japan by a skilled artisan circa 1900, or the early 1900’s, the height is 38cm (not including the wooden stand) and the diameter is approximately 17cm at its widest point and its weight is 12kg.**

*Similar to regular black bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra), this clumping variety grows much taller and thicker. It can reach heights of up to 30m tall depending on conditions and can have a diameter up to 25cm per culm (or stalk). Believed to be a native of China, it was introduced in to Japan sometime during the 8th century during the Nara period.

**We had sold this piece locally several years ago and have only just rebought it from our client as he is disposing of all his pieces, so we now have it out for sale again. And although of substantial ‘weight’, shipping from here is by size not weight, so thankfully for the lucky buyer the weight has no bearing whatsoever on the international shipping price. 😉

SIZE: 0.38m high x 0.17m diameter – approximately. (not including base)

WEIGHT: 12KG / 26.5LB
