TYPE: An Inner Mongolian carpet with tigma designs

CIRCA: 1900 / early 1900’s

A carpet from the Inner Mongolia region of China that, given the tigma (cross) design in the striped central field, was probably intended as a seating carpet for the Tibetan market. The outer border contains variations of the so-called happiness circles / lucky coins, the inner secondary border between the two narrow guard stripes is of pearls while the center field consists of coloured parallel strips, the wider ones with tigma crosses. Made circa 1900, it has a very thick pile of soft glossy wool – the overall dark brown colour being undyed naturally abrashed brown wool – cotton warp and weft and the size is 121cm x 65cm with the ends folded over and secured underneath. The thick pile makes it heavy for its size, and it is in good condition.
